Abstract
Since 2021, the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), in higher education has changed how students and teachers are approaching academic assignments. Even though this topic is being researched worldwide, the expansion is fragmented across various settings and methodologies. Therefore, this study aims to inspect the empirical research that deals with preparing and evaluating processes of academic assignments at the tertiary level, in the context of AI integration. This systematic review employs the PRISMA 2020 guidelines of AI applications in assignment writing, assessment, and feedback published between 2021 and 2025. Some of the key findings are, (1) most studies used qualitative or mixed-method designs, (2) samples were small and context-specific, (3) ChatGPT is the most studied LLM, (4) AI improved productivity but raised concerns over plagiarism, equity, and overreliance, and (5) AI policies, transparency, and educator training have been recommended. The results will allow educators, researchers, and policymakers to have a better understanding of the current practices and directions in AI-assisted assignments. In addition, this review can guide future empirical research by specifying unexplored areas within this domain. However, this study is limited by the usage of a single database. It is recommended that future empirical research needs to include comparative AI tool research, long-term effects monitoring, discipline-specific focus, and policy impact evaluation.
