Abstract
Background: The tourism and hospitality industries in Bangladesh are a major source of economic development; however, the industries have not widely adopted 4IR technologies because of a lack of adequate infrastructure, skilled workers, and cyber-security systems. Ecotourism areas, such as Tanguar Haor (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), illustrate the necessity for technology-based solutions in tourism management that consider both environmental and social sustainability while allowing for continued growth in tourism to these locations. Objective: This study aims to examine the current adoption of 4IR technologies in Bangladesh’s tourism and hospitality sector, with a focus on Tanguar Haor, and to identify key challenges, opportunities, and potential synergies between tourism development and wetland conservation. Methodology: An exploratory mixed-methods approach was employed using secondary empirical data from previously published surveys of 35 tourism and hospitality stakeholders, supported by qualitative content analysis of relevant national and international tourism studies. Results: The findings reveal high adoption of IoT applications (approximately 88.6%) for monitoring and security, moderate use of big data analytics, and low adoption of artificial intelligence and robotics. Major challenges include data security concerns and high implementation costs, while opportunities include improved safety, personalized visitor services, and enhanced environmental monitoring. Conclusion: The study finds the conclusion that by balancing economic gains with environmental preservation, the strategic integration of 4IR technologies can promote sustainable tourist growth in Bangladesh. To fully realise the potential of 4IR in ecotourism sites like Tanguar Haor, targeted investments in cybersecurity regulations, labour upskilling, and digital infrastructure are crucial.
