Microplastic Contamination in the River System of Bangladesh: Sources Pathways and Mitigation Strategies

Abstract
Bangladesh is a land of river but microplastics contamination is a major cause for concern. Rapid urbanization industrial growth and inefficient waste management are responsible for this. These tiny plastics (5mm) are harmful to biodiversity and human life. The main aim of this paper is to determine the sources pathways and extent of microplastics pollution in the river of Bangladesh and to analyze how it can be mitigated also provide policy and technological guidelines for reducing pollution in the future. Secondary data has taken from various online sources pathways and mitigation of microplastics in the river system of Bangladesh and the data has been collected and analyzed for the purpose of the research. From this analysis the lowest mitigation index was observed in 2001 (6.53%) while the highest occurs in 2015 (99.03%). Microplastics contamination was peaked at 87.7 (ppm) on the other hand it reached lowest value of6.52 (ppm) in 2007. Moreover the maximum polymer type concentration was record in 2013 (93.8%) and the minimum in 1995 (.532%). River flow was highest in 2005 with a value of 98.62% along with the lowest value was 1.197% in 2022. Similarly it is also found from descriptive statistics analysis that the average microplastics concentration was 43.61 ppm with standard deviation 21.91, while the mean of mitigation effort index was 52.59% with a higher standard deviation of 28.30%. The greater variance of standard deviation in mitigation effort which indicate that inconsistency in environmental management system where microplastics comparatively stable over the study period. So proper waste management river monitoring system include technology (IoT based) and implementation of strict environmental policies are essential to protect Bangladesh’s river from microplastics pollution.
