Abstract

This study looks at how misinformation affects public trust in news media and institutions in Bangladesh from 2020 to 2025. It uses secondary data from fact-checking organizations and statistical analysis to explore trends in fake news, the types of misinformation, and their connection to trust and confusion. The findings indicate a sharp increase in misinformation, especially related to politics and religion, along with a 25 percent drop in trust and a 20 percent rise in distrust toward media and institutions. Regression analysis shows that trust in fake news has decreased over time, while confusion about facts has grown. This implies that lower trust does not always lead to less uncertainty. Correlation results confirm that political and religious misinformation are the strongest causes of public confusion, while economic misinformation has less impact. The study helps us understand how misinformation damages institutional credibility and civic confidence. It also emphasizes the need for better policies, media literacy programs, and civic initiatives to tackle this growing issue.
