Policy and Governance Frameworks for Climate Adaptation in Bangladesh’s Deltaic Regions

Abstract

Background: Climate adaptation means taking steps to prepare for the current and projected impacts of climate change. Most climate adaptation measures are focused on Bangladesh’s deltaic regions because they face the risk of salinity intrusion, cyclones and massive land loss from sea-level rise. Policy and governance frameworks play an important role in giving guidance and support the actions needed to adapt to climate change especially in delta areas. Methodology: The dataset covers a period of three decades (1994-2023). Data sources include indicators such as soil quality index, water sustainability score, climate resilience index, biodiversity score, crop yield (tons/ha), food security index. The research summarizes the trends and variation, and bar charts are used for comparing the strength of relationships across the indicator. Spearman and distance correlation methods were used for visualizing relationships between indicators. Results: The result showed that there was high distance correlation between biodiversity and soil quality (0.58) and food security and water sustainability (0.53) which indicated strong environmental relationships. Spearman correlations were generally weak, between water sustainability and food security (-0.47), which may suggest some trade-offs. The period from 1994 to 2023, indicators changed over time without showing any apparent long-term trend. Conclusion: Environmental indicators such as biodiversity and soil quality play an important role in food security in the Bangladesh delta regions. Time period between 1994 and 2023 shows the importance of monitoring. Clever policies and focused actions are needed to protect food security and build long-term climate resilience. These actions will help communities adjust to changing environmental conditions and encourage sustainable livelihoods.
