Abstract

Diverse cropping systems have become an effective technique in the modern global agricultural field over the last decades. Although Bangladesh is an agricultural head country, the smallholders are not well enough aware about the adoption of diverse cropping. On the other hand, man-made inconsistency like soil and water pollution, use of excessive chemicals, destruction of arable land, simultaneously with natural disasters and climate variability like drought, salinity, land degradation and floods effect the elasticity of annual crop production as well as threaten food security. The study investigates the effects of diverse cropping system in Bangladesh’s agriculture to ensure the adequate yield, largely the resilient food security. The research utilizes a set of secondary quantitative data of 30 years from (1994 to 2023) on six entities are Soil Quality Index, Water Sustainability Score, Climate Resilience Index, Biodiversity Score, Crop Yield and Food Security Index, each variable reflects a specific aspect of smallholder agricultural sustainability. Trends and testing of variables relationships were determined by graphical analysis. The result visualizes that crop yield index end with an increase of 4.24 over the time, this achievement led smallholders to food security, biodiversity and climate resilience. Whereas other variables fluctuate with time. The data shows the sharp decline of soil quality of 57.25 in 2023. This indicates the importance of taking measured steps while performing diverse cropping to control the soil quality. Overall, the result indicates that over time, the improvements in water sustainability, biodiversity and crop yield reflects how diverse cropping system helps the smallholders become more resilient. But the past initiatives were inadequate, which is having a profound impact on our agriculture. Therefore, the study concludes that adopting diverse cropping system can highly improve the food security and support sustainable agriculture growth in Bangladesh.
