Nature-Based Solutions For Flood Control And Wetlands In Bangladesh

Abstract

. Traditional flood control systems are often not adequate to provide protection in the long term in case of higher rainfall variance due to climate change. Wetlands are the natural buffers offering an inexpensive and flexible substitute that aligns with the concept of ecosystem-based management. This paper examines the use of nature-based solutions to enhance the ability of wetlands to mitigate floods by conserving and restoring wetlands to enhance their capacity in growth and hydrological balance. Some of the variables that were analyzed in this longitudinal dataset analysis (1995-2024) included wetland area, number of flood events, vegetation cover, and water retention rate. Correlation and regression analyses were done to determine the relationship between ecological markers and flood incidences. The data visualization tools were used in tracking long-term ecological patterns. The percentage in 1995 was 36.3%, and it climbs to 51.4% by the time their sample ends in 2024, the data show. This is a clear evidence that their engagement steadily increased over time, from 13.9 in 1995 to 43.5% by 2024. The rate of growth is 50.8 per cent. For women, the proportion rose from 53.3% in 1995 to 49.5% in 2024 with a slight decreasing trend observed there as well. Yet, at the same time women are growing as a percentage of players overall. For instance, it was 47.2 percent in 2010 and 1.9 percent in 2016. It can, therefore, be said that their presence in the economic sector has been steadily rising. Therefore, r = 0.97, indicating a strong positive correlation between the two variables. Long-term flood management can be well based on nature-based strategies. Wetland restoration can be used to enhance water quality, biodiversity, and carbon storage and reduce exposure to disasters by policymakers in climate adaptation plans.
