Bangladesh Electronics and Informatics Society
Venue:
Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka, Bangladesh

The American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) has once again demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence as a faculty-supervised student research team won the Best Poster Presentation Award (Track: Nuclear Energy) at the International Conference on Electronics and Informatics 2026 (ICEI 2026). The conference was organized by Bangladesh Electronics and Informatics Society and hosted by the Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka, from 07–08 May 2026, bringing together researchers, academics, innovators, and young scholars from various institutions.

The award-winning research was titled “Evaluation of Social Viewpoint and Feasibility of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (SMRs) for Baseload Power Generation Across the Coastal Regions of Bangladesh”, with Abstract ID: PP083-NERE168. The study was conducted under the supervision of Md. Mortuza Ahmmed, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, AIUB. The research team consisted of Sumaita Tasnim, Ahmed Aahan Addin, Sadiha Rahman, Shahriar Sadib, and Arizit Chaki Artha.

The study addressed one of the most critical challenges facing Bangladesh in the near future: reliable, clean, and sustainable power generation. Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (SMRs) are emerging nuclear technologies designed to be smaller, more flexible, and potentially more deployable than traditional large-scale nuclear power plants. Their versatility may offer several advantages, including improved scalability, enhanced safety features, reduced land requirements, and the ability to provide stable baseload energy in remote or energy-constrained regions.

From this perspective, the research examined the social viewpoint and feasibility of SMRs in the coastal regions of Bangladesh, where energy security, climate resilience, and infrastructure sustainability have become increasingly important concerns. By connecting public perception, feasibility assessment, and sustainable energy planning, the study offered a timely academic contribution to discussions on how advanced nuclear technologies can support the country’s long-term development goals. The research also highlighted the importance of understanding social acceptance before implementing emerging energy technologies at the national level.

In addition to winning the Best Poster Presentation Award, AIUB demonstrated strong institutional participation throughout ICEI 2026. A remarkable highlight was the contribution of 37 research papers by students under the supervision of Md. Mortuza Ahmmed, reflecting his dedicated role in mentoring students and promoting research excellence. This significant academic presence further strengthened AIUB’s position at ICEI 2026 and showcased the university’s active engagement in national and international scholarly platforms. This achievement is not only a recognition of an individual research project but also a reflection of AIUB’s growing capacity for interdisciplinary research, academic leadership, and innovative learning. It reflects the university’s commitment to encouraging students to address real-life challenges through research, creativity, and scientific inquiry. Special appreciation is extended to the Office of Research, AIUB, for its continuous support and encouragement in promoting student research and facilitating participation in national and international academic platforms.

AIUB proudly congratulates the award-winning research team and their supervisor Md. Mortuza Ahmmed. This success brings honor to the AIUB community and inspires future researchers to pursue meaningful, socially relevant, and impactful research for the development of Bangladesh.
