About Us

Welcome to Department of English

The Department of English, part of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (FASS), embarked on its journey with two main objectives: firstly, to enrich and nurture students' mental, ethical, and creative aspects of their personality, and secondly, to equip them for successful professional and technical employment in the future. Its aim is to become a leading educational institution that keeps pace with the modern world through an effective learning process.

There is no doubt that ethics, values, morality, and creativity are fundamental elements in the development of a nation. As a pioneering private university in Bangladesh, AIUB has always been committed to instilling these elements in its students, considering them as broader concerns of society. The Department of English firmly believes that value-based education can cultivate excellent leadership, ultimately leading to the advancement of the nation. With this in mind, the English curriculum has been designed to provide students with general knowledge and foster their intellectual capacities. Additionally, English, as a foundational department or subject, emphasizes practical implementation more than any other department or program. In other words, it offers one of the finest Liberal Arts curricula available.

The Department of English at AIUB currently offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in English, consisting of 140 credits, across eight consecutive semesters in accordance with the standards set by BNQF and UGC. These credits are divided into General Education Courses, English Core Courses, and English Elective Courses. Students are required to complete 39 credits of general education (13 courses), 71 credits of core courses (24 courses), and 30 credits of electives (10 courses, including 'Teaching Practicum'). The Department of English at AIUB is dedicated to enhancing students' proficiency in both the English language and literature. It offers two main areas of concentration: Major in Linguistics and TESL, and Major in Literature.

The Major in Linguistics and TESL aims to develop students' expertise and skills in the field of Applied Linguistics, preparing them for careers as language teachers, teacher-trainers, translators, administrators, or in other fields where knowledge of linguistic issues is important. The program is designed for those aspiring to become teachers of English as a foreign language. To fulfill this objective, a set of courses has been designed to raise awareness of classroom dynamics, introduce participants to various approaches in TESL, and provide criteria for selecting relevant approaches based on their own teaching situations. The program also enables participants to make informed decisions regarding classroom methodology, drawing on their understanding of research in second language acquisition and recent language teaching approaches.

The Major in Literature familiarizes students with British, American, and South Asian English literature, as well as their cultural and historical contexts. It also aims to impart knowledge of literary theories and philosophical issues. Literature classes emphasize the ability to articulate and defend ideas, appreciate diverse perspectives, critically evaluate the themes presented in individual works, and comprehend the complexities of human interactions. The department's curriculum is consistently updated with a focus on critical thinking and effective writing skills, reflecting contemporary concerns.

The Department of English, AIUB promises to enhance the proficiency of both the areas of English language and literature among the students. It aims to be the best education provider keeping pace with the modern world with an effective learning process.
