A compendious study on histogram equalization for natural image contrast enhancement

Contrast enhancement plays a vital role in highlighting the visual features of contrast-distorted images. Histogram equalization is a popular CE method, although it fails to maintain the natural appearance of histogram-equalized (HE-ed) images due to its limitations. Many modification schemes have been introduced to overcome the limitations via modifying the method. This paper presents a compendious study on these modification techniques for natural image CE. IH clipping schemes outperform other modification schemes in maintaining the natural appearance of HE-ed images.
