Gender Issues and Development

The notion of gender, as it is presently understood, gained widespread acceptance in the early 1970s. The term was utilized as an analytical concept to establish a clear distinction between biological sex distinctions and their influence on behavior and abilities, which are then categorized as either 'masculine' or 'feminine'. By applying the research findings from these studies to development practice, gender approaches to women's development aim to solve the shortcomings of previous integrationist policies of Women in Development (WID) programs, which aimed to incorporate women into the development stream. During that period, the development enterprise regarded women's economic roles as confined to reproduction, homemaking, childbearing and raising children, and becoming housewives. Development policy and strategy only prioritized men. Anticipated outcomes included the provision of advantages that would specifically favor women as well as men and other gender.
