The Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE), AIUB organized a 14-day long industrial training program for EEE students at Ghorashal Training Center, Ghorashal, Palash, Narsingdi. Thirty students from AIUB participated in the two-week training program from May 19 to June 1, 2024. The Ghorashal Training Center, operated by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPBD) and located within the Ghorashal Power Plant residential area, offers professional and industrial training to engineers of BPDB and university students respectively.
On Saturday, May 18, 2024, students were reached at Ghorashal Training Center accompanied by Dr. Shameem Ahmad, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB and Md. Shahariar Parvez, Assistant Professor and Special Assistant [OSA], AIUB. The AIUB trainees completed a comprehensive 14-day program, which included 10 days of plant visits and 2 lab sessions. They gained insights into the entire power production cycle, covering generation, transmission, and distribution processes. Detailed sessions on thermal diagrams, boilers, auxiliaries, turbine maintenance, and Combined Cycle Power Plants (CCPP) operations equipped them with essential operational skills. The program also addressed plant synchronization, emergency shutdown procedures, turbine rolling, load sharing, chemical plant operations, water treatment, hydrogen plant functions, control systems, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), transformer test procedures, protection systems, single-line diagrams, and Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) operations.
A visit to one of Bangladesh's largest grid substations at Ghorashal provided insights into the eastern and western grid connection. Practical sessions with a gas turbine power plant simulator offered realistic understanding of turbine operations and management. Students' performances were evaluated through an MCQ test and viva at the end of the training, and certificates were awarded. The closing ceremony saw the presence of Mr. Nafiz Ahmed Chisty, Associate Professor and Department Head [EEE], AIUB, Dr. Md. Ehasanul Haque, Senior Assistant Professor and Department Head [IPE], AIUB, Dr. Rifat Hazari, Senior Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, and Dr. Shameem Ahmad, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, who handed over a token of appreciation to Engr. B.M. Arifur Rahman, Director [SE], Ghorashal Training Center, BPDB and Engr. Mohammad Ali Firoz, Deputy Director [XEN], Ghorashal Training Center, BPDB.
This industrial training aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing students with hands-on, practical learning experiences that enhance their technical skills and employability. It also corresponds with SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by fostering knowledge and expertise in energy production and infrastructure, contributing to the development of sustainable and innovative energy solutions.
