The World Environment Day 2024 was observed with a series of events at the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) premises on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. The program was organized by the AIUB Environment Club (AEC), supported by the Department of Chemistry and presented by the Office of Students Affairs (OSA).
Professor Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman, Pro-Vice Chancellor of AIUB inaugurated the events of the day by distributing saplings and seeds among representatives of different AIUB student clubs. Mr. Mashiour Rahman (Dean in charge, Faculty of Science & Technology, AIUB), Professor Dr. S. Mosaddeq Ahmed, (Head, Department of Chemistry, AIUB and Mentor, AIUB Environment Club), Dr. Manzur H. Khan (Proctor, Director of OSA & Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, AIUB), Dr. Mohammad Mahbub Rabbani (Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Deputy Director of the Dr. Anwarul Abedin Institute of Innovation, AIUB and Mentor, AIUB Environment Club), Dr. Md. Tariqul Islam (Associate Professor , Department of Chemistry, AIUB), Dr. Farzana Khalil (Assistant Professor , Department of Chemistry, AIUB), Dr. Md. Anisur Rahman Jamil (Assistant Professor , Department of Chemistry, AIUB), Dr. Jahida Binte Islam (Assistant Professor , Department of Chemistry, AIUB), Dr. Abdullah Al Nahid (Assistant Professor , Department of Chemistry, AIUB), Mr. Shahriar Atik Fahim (Lecturer, Department of Chemistry, AIUB), Ms. Ratna Akter (Lecturer, Department of Chemistry, AIUB), several other faculty members from different departments, administrative officers, students and members of AEC were present at that time.
In the afternoon, a seminar was held in the Multipurpose Hall, Level-10, Building-D on “Air Pollution: Understanding, Challenges and Solutions” with an opening speech by Mr. Mashiour Rahman (Dean in charge, Faculty of Science & Technology, AIUB). Professor Dr. Md. Mominul Islam, Department of Chemistry, University of Dhaka, was the distinguish speaker of the seminar and very efficiently explained his observations about air pollution with its causes, problems and solutions related to this important global environmental issue. Prof. Dr. Mominul answered the questions of students and faculty members who enjoyed the whole presentation with a curious mind and attention. Later, Professor Dr. S. Mosaddeq Ahmed, (Head, Department of Chemistry, AIUB) along with Dr. Mohammad Mahbub Rabbani (Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry) handed over a crest and a gift box to the speaker of the seminar with heartfelt thanks for his valuable time and visit AIUB. Dr. Humaira Ferdous (Associate & Head, Dept. of Physics, AIUB), Dr. Begum Nadira Ferousi (Associate Professor, AUST), Ms. Saira Matin (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Social Science, AIUB), all other faculty members of the Department of Chemistry were also present during the seminar.
After the seminar, a rally displaying various placards marched across the campus to extend awareness and inspire students to take necessary steps to save our environment. Members of the AIUB Environment Club, general students, faculty members, and administrative officers of AIUB participated in the rally.
Prior to arranging these events, AEC decorated entrance of AIUB and campus with various types of posters containing different messages and instructions to keep our environment sustainable and specially focusing on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration” – the theme of World Environment Day 2024.
