The 21st of April 2010 arrived as a splendid Wednesday and the class of Landscape Design Studio of Architecture Department made a trip to Jatiyo Smriti Shoudha, Savar. Smriti Shoudha signifies the courage of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Bangladesh. A nation wide design competition was held for the project in 1978. Smriti Shoudha what we see today is the signature work of Architect Syed Moinul Hossain winner amongst the fifty-seven entries.
Deliberation was to extend the skills of landscape design through sensitivity to environmental, social and cultural contexts of design. Students along with faculties explored the Smriti Shoudha area by walking through the complex. The complex is stretched over an area of eighty four acres which is again wrapped around by a green belt. Several mass-graves and a water body are placed axially to the Shoudha (monument). Flower-bearing, scent-emanating, shadow-giving, trees that marked the passing of the seasons presented pleasing experience. The team strode down the large plaza, pedestrian zones along the lake’s edge; tried to grasp the theme of the overall development around the monument. The subsequent challenge for students was to synthesize the landscaping process integrating site and program comprehension into a coherent output through a report which has to be submitted later.
This trip was also supplemented by a pause to HBRI (House Building Research Institute) on the way back to the city at Mirpur, Dhaka. As a part of the scientific research display of HBRI offered the team to have a look of the ‘Lift House’ (house for flood prone areas) and a ‘Rammed Earth Structure’ built on their premise. The students found these innovative structures really thought provoking and interesting in our context. To call the entire day a delightful, pleasant learning experience would be an underestimation.
