On Monday, July 28th, 2025, IEEE AIUB Student Branch, AIUB Business Club, AIUB Environment Club, and AIUB Economics Club successfully organized a seminar titled “Bangladesh’s Journey Towards the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2016-2025”. The event was aimed to engage students in a meaningful discussion on Bangladesh's progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting national efforts, global partnerships, and the vital role of youth and academia in driving sustainable development.
The seminar began with a brief introduction by the host, followed by a keynote speech from Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nurunnabi, UNESCO Chair, Director, Center for Sustainability& Climate, PSU, Academic Visitor, Oxford, Founder, VISA & Oxford Impact Group. He highlighted the role of the IPCC, the SDGs, and disparities in global green initiatives. He emphasized alarming issues like $125 trillion in global food loss and predicted that 81.5% of tasks will be automated by 2030 stressing the growing value of skills over degrees in addressing sustainability. He also discussed organizational change, job market shifts, and regional data such as tertiary education enrollment in MENA along with successful sustainability roadmaps. Key national topics included Bangladesh’s upcoming LDC graduation in 2026, geopolitical challenges to climate action, data falsification, export discrepancies, and poor environmental and education rankings. Despite these concerns, he praised Bangladesh’s 6th global rank in SDG performance and AIUB’s strong green efforts, especially its number 2 position in the Impact Ranking. The session concluded with a Q&A, where Dr. Nurunnabi encouraged students to actively engage in sustainability initiatives.
Then, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman, Pro Vice-Chancellor, American International University–Bangladesh, delivered his remarks, acknowledging the efforts of all involved and appreciating the contributions of the organizers, speakers, and participants. This was followed by special remarks from Prof. Dr. Saiful Islam, Honorable Vice-Chancellor, AIUB, who commended the initiative and shared his inspiring vision for empowering students through innovation, academic excellence, and a strong commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a gesture of gratitude, a token of appreciation was presented to the distinguished speaker for his valuable contributions to the seminar.
The seminar successfully educated participants on Bangladesh’s progress and challenges in achieving the SDGs, the global context of sustainability, including climate action, automation, and food security and the importance of skills development, transparency, and youth engagement in building a more sustainable future. A total of over 80 participants attended the event.
