Workshop on ‘Data-Driven Site Analysis for Urban Designing’

Events Date:
April 21
Year: 2026
Organized By:
Studio mentors Farzana Siddiqua and Md. Sariful Islam, Studio VII, Architecture Department, AIUB
Venue:
Urban Studio Annex 2, Room No 2209

The Department of Architecture at American International University-Bangladesh successfully organized a two-day workshop titled Data-Driven Site Analysis for Urban Designing for the students of Design Studio VII. The workshop was held on April 21 and April 28, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at Design Studio VII, Room-2209, Annex 02, AIUB.

The primary objective of the workshop was to introduce students to the integration of environmental and spatial data in urban design processes. It aimed to equip participants with hands-on experience with the analytical methods and simulation tools necessary for data-driven decision-making in modern urban design.

Architect and researcher Md. Sazzad Islam led the workshop, which included 32 participants, including academics and students. His professional insights and hands-on guidance enriched the learning experience for the participants.

The workshop was divided into two structured phases. First Phase was focused on spatial analysis using DepthmapX, where students explored space syntax, axial and VGA analysis, and interpretation of spatial hierarchy and movement patterns. The session emphasized how spatial configuration influences accessibility and urban flow.

Second Phase was concentrated on environmental analysis using Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, and Ladybug Tools. Participants engaged in simulations related to sun path, shadow analysis, and solar radiation, using a real-world site in Cumilla. The hands-on exercises enabled students to generate environmental maps and integrate findings into design strategies.

Throughout the workshop, students explored critical research questions such as the relationship between spatial integration and thermal comfort, optimal placement of public spaces, and how design interventions can respond to both environmental and spatial datasets.

The initiative reflects AIUB’s commitment to fostering innovative, research-based learning environments and preparing students to address real-world urban challenges through advanced digital tools and analytical methods.

The workshop was proposed and coordinated by Farzana Siddiqua, Assistant Professor and Research Moderator of the Urbanism and Human Settlement Domain and Md. Sariful Islam, Assistant professor, Studio guide of Urban Design. The event was conducted under the guidance of Mr. Arefeen Ibrahim, Head of the Department of Architecture, AIUB.

This workshop marks another significant step in strengthening AIUB’s academic excellence and its emphasis on data-driven and sustainable urban design education.
