The vision is to develop the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication as a center of excellence that produces creative, critical and committed graduates who will apply their knowledge and skills for the betterment of the local and global community.

 

Mission of the Department

The missions of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication are as follows:

Mission-1: The department will strive to attract leading academicians and promising students from home and aboard and provide them with a teaching-learning environment that encourages engagement with real-world problems and their solutions.

Mission-2: The curriculum has been designed with an aim to underline the mass media’s role in shaping the self and the society, and how this can be used for the public good.

Mision-3: A blending of theoretical and practical courses will equip the students with a deeper understanding of the dominant philosophical paradigms of the mass communication discipline as well as the latest tools and technologies of the creative industries.

Mission-4: The department will always facilitate the scholarly pursuits of students and teachers with the necessary resources, funds, and infrastructure with an aim to use mass media for the greater good of the society.

Fundamental Skills

PLO 1 (FS 1). Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the well-established principles of art, design, composition, theories, and concepts of journalism and mass communication, and of the way in which those principles, theories and concepts have developed;

PLO 2 (FS 2). Apply underlying concepts, theories and principles outside the context journalism, media Studies and animation, including, their application appropriate professional context;

PLO 3 (FS 3). Apply the acquired knowledge and skills in addressing issues/solving problems and technical troubleshooting independently and in some cases with minimal supervision;

PLO 4 (FS 4). Evaluate critically, plan, develop and execute the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems in the field of journalism and mass communication;

PLO 5 (FS 5). Support, mentor or lead team members as media and communication professionals in the media and communication industry and academia, including presenting and defending visual concepts to a target audience; and

The curriculum is designed to develop competent, tech-savvy, adaptable, and resilient professionals who possess both advanced technical skills and critical thinking abilities. Graduates are equipped to work as journalists, broadcast professionals, animators, content creators, communication specialists, and researchers. The department remains committed to providing comprehensive student support throughout their academic journey, fostering an environment where students can pursue excellence and develop into ethical, and skilled communicators prepared for the evolving media landscapes.

 

Achievements of JMC

Over the past two decades, the department has produced numerous accomplished journalists, creative advertisers, photographers, filmmakers, and communication professionals. It is connected with two leading international media and communication organizations including, International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), and International Communication Association (ICA). JMC is also an institutional member of the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC).

The department regularly organizes international conferences e.g.  the first BIMSTEC Film, Media and Journalism Conference in 2019, in collaboration with the Department of Television, Film and Photography at the University of Dhaka, and the 10th Communication and Journalism Educators’ Network Conference in 2025, with the support of DW Akademie. JMC has collaboration with many international universities. Using its own facilities, the department organized. It also regularly organizes lecture series, workshops, field visits, and various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Journalism Major Graduates

Mac Lab

The Mac Lab is the country's largest digital media facility, housing 40 high-performance computers dedicated to content creation and multimedia production. Students use this facility for graphic design, video editing, digital photography, and producing multimedia journalism projects. The lab is equipped with professional-level tools commonly used in media organizations. Lab assistants are available to help students develop their technical skills. This facility provides all JMC students with hands-on experience needed for careers in the digital media industry.

Animation Lab

The AIUB Animation Lab represents a hi-tech learning environment designed to inspire creativity and innovation among students. Equipped with the latest high-performance machines and industry-standard animation software, the lab enables students to explore 2D and 3D animation, digital storytelling, visual effects, and creative media production. Our facility provides hands-on training that connects academic learning with professional industry practices. The entire room is vibrantly decorated with cartoon characters and artistic visuals, creating an energetic and motivating atmosphere that encourages imagination and collaboration. Students can experiment, design, animate, and render projects using advanced tools similar to those used in global studios. In the future, AIUB plans to further expand the lab with emerging technologies such as real-time rendering, virtual production, and AI-assisted animation workflows. These developments will strengthen the university’s commitment to producing skilled animators ready for the evolving creative industries in Bangladesh and beyond.

Television Studio (Media Studio)

The Media Studio is a fully equipped professional television facility where students produce live and pre-recorded television content. The studio includes multiple cameras, professional lighting systems, audio equipment, and a control room for managing broadcasts. Students work on news programs, documentaries, and interview shows, gaining practical experience in all aspects of television production. The facility features a professional news desk, green screen technology, and teleprompter systems. Through this hands-on experience, students develop the skills needed for careers in broadcast journalism and television production.

Multimedia Classrooms

The Multimedia Classrooms are state-of-the-art learning spaces designed to provide immersive and interactive educational experiences for JMC students. These classrooms are equipped with advanced display systems, audio equipment, and technology infrastructure that enable interactive learning and collaborative projects. Students use these spaces for lectures, workshops, presentations, and group discussions that integrate multimedia content and real-time feedback. The modern design and technology support innovative teaching methods that prepare students for the digital media environment they will encounter in their professional careers. These facilities create an engaging learning environment where students can develop critical thinking and collaborative skills essential for success in journalism and mass communication.

Professional Broadcasting Equipment

The department provides a comprehensive collection of professional broadcasting and production equipment designed to support student projects across all JMC programs. The camera inventory includes 9 professional video cameras and 2 DSLR units equipped for high-end cinematography and broadcast-quality content capture. For lighting, the department features a complete suite of 15 professional lighting units from Camera brand, enabling students to master complex lighting setups for studio and field productions. The broadcasting infrastructure includes industry-standard online broadcasting tools, including the TriCaster mini-HD4 platform and dedicated control surfaces for professional-grade live streaming and multi-camera production. The production tools include professional-grade audio and video switchers for managing multiple input sources during live broadcasts, along with advanced sound recording systems for high-quality audio production. By working with this professional-grade equipment, students develop the technical expertise and industry knowledge needed for successful careers in broadcast journalism, television production, and multimedia content creation.

 

Program Major

BSS in Journalism and Mass Communication Program

The department now offers a four-year Bachelor of Social Science (BSS) degree in eight consecutive semesters with the following majors:

Descriptions of the Majors

  1. Major in Journalism

The major is designed to prepare students for entering the rapidly expanding media and communication industry. It is particularly suited for those aspiring to become journalists, communication experts, or development practitioners. The courses are designed to enable students to critically analyze contemporary national and international issues as presented through newspapers, news magazines, television and radio channels and online media platforms. The major puts particular emphasis on practical skills in reporting and editing for both print and electronic media, producing and publishing online news content, developing multimedia news packages, managing newsroom operations, and effectively using the internet and social media as tools for news dissemination.

  1. Major in Television Production and Animation

Considering the rapid growth of the television industry and the emerging animation sector in the country, the department has introduced this major. The aim is to produce highly technologically literate graduates who can pursue careers in electronic media as journalists and producers, as well as take on leadership roles in the promising field of animation. The curriculum includes engaging courses with a strong emphasis on practical learning experiences.

Students in this major are not only exposed to theoretical knowledge but also receive practical hands-on training in animation film production. The intricacies of animation are taught by renowned instructors from both home and abroad. With the increasing use of visual effects in various audio-visual productions, the promise of animation has already become evident, making this program highly relevant in the current context. Moreover, there is a significant shortage of professional animators in the country, and the department aims to address the gap by producing skilled graduates. As the world continues to become increasingly digitalized, demand for professional and qualified animators is expected to rise substantially both nationally and internationally.  

 

Required Credits for Graduation

BSS in Journalism and Mass Communication is a four-year undergraduate program with 140 credit hours. These credits are divided into three areas:

  1. General education multidisciplinary courses: 35 credits (12 courses).
  2. Journalism and mass communication Core courses: 75 credits (25 courses).
  3. Major courses: 30 credits (10 courses for each major).

Students admitted in the Fall 2024-2025 Semester must also complete an internship (1 credit) and a seminar course (2 credits) in addition to nine major courses to fulfill the requirements for the single major. Students also have the option to pursue a double major, which requires the completion of 170 credits in total. This includes an additional 30 credits (10 courses) dedicated to the second major. To pursue a minor in journalism and mass communication, students are required to complete at least four major courses, totaling 12 credits.
