SDG-17 Initiative
SDG Initiative
- Delivering Dedicated Outreach and Educational Activities for the Wider Community
AIUB demonstrates an exceptional commitment to providing education for SDGs in the wider community through a robust portfolio of dedicated outreach educational activities. The university strategically transforms its campus into a national hub for youth engagement, targeting local residents—specifically school and college students—as well as its own alumni community and displaced people. This outreach is pivotal for promoting STEM education and sustainable development principles to a broad audience. By organizing and hosting large-scale, public-facing competitions, AIUB provides critical educational activities that advance SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). Events like the AIUB CS Fest, the NASA Space Apps Challenge, the National Physics Olympiad, and the Space Exploration Olympiad (which includes participants as young as 6) engage thousands of students from hundreds of educational institutions across Bangladesh. These competitions serve as powerful platforms for identifying talent and promoting innovative solutions to SDG-related challenges. Beyond STEM, AIUB engages the wider community through sports and arts, hosting Inter-College championships for over 30 colleges and photography workshops for school students. Furthermore, AIUB maintains a strong, continuous partnership with its alumni community through dedicated outreach events like the "AIUBian Europe Meetup" 1 and numerous career clinics organized by the Office of Placement and Alumni (OPA), ensuring lifelong learning and professional development.
Besides the in-campus involvement there are quite a few student club activities which reach the wider community. Among them the most noticeable and admirable activities are conducted by ‘Kathpencil Pathshala’ and ‘Shomoy club’.
Kathpencil Pathshala is initiated by the management of the university and supervised by the senior students. Kathpencil Pathshala is trying to build an Education Safety Zone to educate underprivileged children in career-oriented education. At different locations there are branches of Kathpencil Pathshala which provide education to the underprivileged children aged 5-12 years old. In that school all educational materials are provided along with meals for the students who have no opportunity to attend traditional schools. Not only following the curriculum of the national primary education board but also different types of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are arranged. Some vocational and technical learnings are also provided so that the young children have some skills for their livelihood. The goals of Kathpencil Pathshala are diversified into four categories: 1. Arts for education, 2. Crafts for Foods and goods, 3. Theatre for sustainable development, 4. Play for grown-up. Kathpencil Pathshala has been able to successfully conduct its operations to provide underprivileged children with a holistic environment for learning through the valuable cooperation and support of the American International University - Bangladesh (AIUB), since 2013.
AIUB Social Welfare Club- SHOMOY where SHOMOY stands for Social Helping Organization to Motivate Our Youth. It is a university-based students club of American International University- Bangladesh (AIUB). The club was founded on 5th April of 2009 by some former students and the management authority of AIUB with a vision of motivating young generation to work for the betterment of this society. Pursuing a different calling, the AIUB Social Welfare Club – Shomoy, works towards social welfare and development, supporting the university’s community service initiatives. They not only support various social causes, but they also raise funds, run awareness campaigns, and even organize events to further the causes, both locally and nationally, like the IDEAS Challenge (National Competition for Showcasing Ideas to Address Social Issues), Winter Clothing Drive, ‘Eid er Khushi’ initiative, Flood Relief Campaign, Hygiene Awareness Campaign, Self-Defense Workshops, Blood Donation Campaigns, amongst several others.
Students of the Engineering clubs visit vulnerable areas and set up solar panels and aware the villagers about clean water and use of renewable energy. They also set up a computer network and provide training on how to use computer to collect information about the market. Also, students of the Architecture department prepare low cost and sustainable housing for the low-income group and underprivileged people. They visit different slum areas in Dhaka city and restructure the existing houses which allows more fresh air and light in their living rooms.

- Developing International Best Practices at AIUB through Global Collaboration and Research
AIUB has institutionalized a comprehensive strategy to develop international best practice on tackling the SDGs, primarily through extensive international collaboration and research. The university’s 2024 approach is systematic, designed to embed global standards directly into its operational and academic frameworks. This is achieved through a multi-layered strategy. Firstly, AIUB actively engages in bilateral partnerships with foreign universities, such as Hochschule Darmstadt (Germany), Sasin School of Management (Thailand) 1, Pan Pacific University (Philippines), and Danang University (Vietnam). These collaborations facilitate faculty and student mobility, joint research initiatives, and a platform to review comparative approaches in curriculum and pedagogy. Secondly, AIUB participates in high-impact multilateral research consortiums. Its involvement in the Erasmus+ SOHO project, for example, brings it into partnership with universities across Europe and Asia to develop international best practice for sustainable tourism. Similarly, its role as a supporting partner in the Durham University, UK "JusTN0W" project demonstrates collaboration on research for net-zero transitions. Thirdly, and most significantly, AIUB benchmarks its own institutional quality against the highest global standards. Its membership in the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE) 1, receiving the Asia-Pacific Quality Network (APQN) Quality Award, and being a signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum (MCO) are deliberate actions to adopt and develop international best practices. By participating in global policy dialogues like the IAU and QS Higher Ed Summits, AIUB actively reviews comparative international strategies on sustainability and education, ensuring its own practices align with global SDG efforts.
