Bottom Financial Quintile Admission Target

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) demonstrates its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) by establishing a formal policy framework designed to facilitate the admission of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, including those from the bottom 20% of household income group. While AIUB does not employ a rigid numerical quota, its primary admission target is articulated through its official "Admission Policy for Underrepresented Group" (https://www.aiub.edu/admission/admission-policy/aiub-admission-policy-for-underrepresented-group-). This policy explicitly identifies "low-income" individuals as a designated cohort for admission, alongside other underrepresented groups, thereby creating a formal pathway for their inclusion. This policy-driven target is operationalized through an extensive and proactive outreach strategy. The university leverages its significant resources and campus facilities to host a wide array of academic and co-curricular events, such as national Olympiads, programming contests, and inter-college sports championships. These large-scale events, often free and open to students from schools and colleges across all of Bangladesh, function as a meritocratic admission pipeline. This strategy allows AIUB to identify and attract talented students from all socioeconomic strata, including the bottom financial quintile, breaking down aspirational and financial barriers. This active outreach, combined with a non-discriminatory admission policy, ensures that all qualified students have the opportunity to apply, with their financial needs subsequently addressed by AIUB's comprehensive financial aid and scholarship programs. AIUB has a number of great admission policies and scholarships, demonstrating its commitment to accessibility. The university maintains a specific admission target to actively admit students from the bottom financial quintile. This policy focuses on students who fall within the bottom 20% of household income group, promoting diverse opportunities in the country.

Freshman Student Orientation for Summer 2023-24 at AIUB

This event represents the successful outcome of the university's admission targets, welcoming a new cohort that includes students admitted under the "Admission Policy for Underrepresented Group".1 The orientation provides crucial information on university policies, services, and resources, which is especially beneficial for students from the bottom financial quintile who may be new to the university environment. The presence of high-level university officials, including the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, emphasizes the institutional support for all new students. This event supports SDG 1 (No Poverty) by ensuring that targeted low-income students are successfully integrated into the university and supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing a strong start to their academic careers.
