Bottom Financial Quintile Student Success

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) defines student success and graduation/completion targets, particularly for students from the bottom 20% household income group, as achieving sustainable employability. The university's "target" is not merely a graduation statistic but a comprehensive ecosystem designed to ensure that graduates possess the skills, network, and opportunities necessary to secure high-value careers, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty. This strategy is critical, as students from low-income backgrounds often possess the requisite academic knowledge but lack the social capital and professional networks to navigate the job market. AIUB’s Office of Placement and Alumni (OPA) is central to this mission, organizing a continuous pipeline of programmes and initiatives. This pipeline begins with foundational skill-building workshops (e.g., in MS Excel, 'Git', and research), advances to career-specific technical training, and culminates in high-impact networking and recruitment events. The annual AIUB Job Fair, preparatory clinics, and direct alumni mentorship sessions function as a formal bridge to the corporate world, ensuring that student success is measured by a successful transition from "graduation to employment." This holistic approach ensures that a student's economic background does not determine their career trajectory, fulfilling the ultimate aim of SDG 1.

AIUB Hosts Job Fair 2024

On December 21, 2024, AIUB hosted its flagship "AIUB Job Fair 2024," featuring 117 leading national and multinational companies. This event is the cornerstone of AIUB’s strategy for ensuring bottom financial quintile student success, serving as a direct mechanism for graduation/completion targets. For students from low-income families, this event is transformative; it provides direct "access to university facilities" to network with and be recruited by top employers, an opportunity they might otherwise lack. By bridging the gap between graduation and employment, the Job Fair provides a tangible pathway to economic empowerment and self-sufficiency, ensuring that students from all backgrounds can successfully complete their studies with a clear career in sight. This initiative is a powerful tool for achieving SDG 1 (No Poverty) by directly facilitating decent work (SDG 8) for its graduates.

Alumni at AIUB - Internship clinic for FBA interns organized by OPA

The Office of Placement and Alumni (OPA) organized an "Internship Clinic" for FBA interns on February 1, 2024, featuring an AIUB alumnus as the speaker. This clinic is a targeted initiative to ensure student success for those transitioning from academic study to professional internships—a critical step for successful completion. For students from the bottom 20% of household income group, who may lack professional connections, this mentorship is invaluable. The alumnus provided practical guidance on career planning, goal setting, and professional conduct, effectively building the social capital and industry-specific knowledge needed to succeed. This program directly supports SDG 1 (No Poverty) by equipping students with the tools for economic self-sufficiency and SDG 4 (Quality Education) by linking academic learning with real-world professional practice, ensuring a high rate of graduation/completion into professional roles.

AIUB Job Fair 2024 Technical Session, Tips and Tactics for your Successful Career

In preparation for the annual Job Fair, the Office of Placement and Alumni (OPA) conducted a technical session on December 11, 2024, titled "Tips and Tactics for your Successful Career".3 This workshop, led by a successful AIUB alumnus, is a key component of AIUB’s student success framework, particularly for those from the bottom financial quintile. It provides essential, practical skills on professional networking (LinkedIn), interview techniques, and building a professional profile. These are critical soft skills that students from low-income backgrounds may not have had the opportunity to develop. By providing this programme for free, AIUB ensures all students are equally prepared to engage with employers, thereby leveling the playing field and supporting their successful completion and transition to employment. This initiative strongly supports SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
