SDG Initiative
American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) demonstrates its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) by establishing a formal policy framework designed to facilitate the admission of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, including those from the bottom 20% of household income group. While AIUB does not employ a rigid numerical quota, its primary admission target is articulated through its official "Admission Policy for Underrepresented Group" (https://www.aiub.edu/admission/admission-policy/aiub-admission-policy-for-underrepresented-group-). This policy explicitly identifies "low-income" individuals as a designated cohort for admission, alongside other underrepresented groups, thereby creating a formal pathway for their inclusion. This policy-driven target is operationalized through an extensive and proactive outreach strategy. The university leverages its significant resources and campus facilities to host a wide array of academic and co-curricular events, such as national Olympiads, programming contests, and inter-college sports championships. These large-scale events, often free and open to students from schools and colleges across all of Bangladesh, function as a meritocratic admission pipeline. This strategy allows AIUB to identify and attract talented students from all socioeconomic strata, including the bottom financial quintile, breaking down aspirational and financial barriers. This active outreach, combined with a non-discriminatory admission policy, ensures that all qualified students have the opportunity to apply, with their financial needs subsequently addressed by AIUB's comprehensive financial aid and scholarship programs. AIUB has a number of great admission policies and scholarships, demonstrating its commitment to accessibility. The university maintains a specific admission target to actively admit students from the bottom financial quintile. This policy focuses on students who fall within the bottom 20% of household income group, promoting diverse opportunities in the country.

Freshman Student Orientation for Summer 2023-24 at AIUB
On June 1, 2024, AIUB hosted its orientation for newly enrolled freshman students for the Summer 2023-24 semester. This event represents the successful outcome of the university's admission targets, welcoming a new cohort that includes students admitted under the "Admission Policy for Underrepresented Group".1 The orientation provides crucial information on university policies, services, and resources, which is especially beneficial for students from the bottom financial quintile who may be new to the university environment. By integrating these students from day one, AIUB ensures they have the foundational knowledge to navigate their academic journey successfully. The presence of high-level university officials, including the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, emphasizes the institutional support for all new students. This event supports SDG 1 (No Poverty) by ensuring that targeted low-income students are successfully integrated into the university and supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing a strong start to their academic careers.

Department of Marketing organizes ‘FBA, AIUB Academic Outreach Program’
On May 9, 2024, the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) at AIUB organized an "Academic Outreach Program" for college students at Dhaka Imperial College. This initiative is a key part of AIUB’s strategy to fulfill its admission target for students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, including the bottom 20% of household income group. By providing free career orientation and higher studies guidance directly to college students, AIUB lowers aspirational barriers and informs potential applicants of the opportunities available, regardless of their financial standing. This proactive engagement encourages students from low-income families to consider university education as an achievable goal. The program directly supports SDG 1 (No Poverty) by creating pathways to higher education for economic empowerment and SDG 4 (Quality Education) by sharing academic and career knowledge with the wider community, fostering lifelong learning.

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) defines student success and graduation/completion targets, particularly for students from the bottom 20% household income group, as achieving sustainable employability. The university's "target" is not merely a graduation statistic but a comprehensive ecosystem designed to ensure that graduates possess the skills, network, and opportunities necessary to secure high-value careers, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty. This strategy is critical, as students from low-income backgrounds often possess the requisite academic knowledge but lack the social capital and professional networks to navigate the job market. AIUB’s Office of Placement and Alumni (OPA) is central to this mission, organizing a continuous pipeline of programmes and initiatives. This pipeline begins with foundational skill-building workshops (e.g., in MS Excel, 'Git', and research), advances to career-specific technical training, and culminates in high-impact networking and recruitment events. The annual AIUB Job Fair, preparatory clinics, and direct alumni mentorship sessions function as a formal bridge to the corporate world, ensuring that student success is measured by a successful transition from "graduation to employment." This holistic approach ensures that a student's economic background does not determine their career trajectory, fulfilling the ultimate aim of SDG 1.
AIUB Hosts Job Fair 2024
On December 21, 2024, AIUB hosted its flagship "AIUB Job Fair 2024," featuring 117 leading national and multinational companies. This event is the cornerstone of AIUB’s strategy for ensuring bottom financial quintile student success, serving as a direct mechanism for graduation/completion targets. For students from low-income families, this event is transformative; it provides direct "access to university facilities" to network with and be recruited by top employers, an opportunity they might otherwise lack. By bridging the gap between graduation and employment, the Job Fair provides a tangible pathway to economic empowerment and self-sufficiency, ensuring that students from all backgrounds can successfully complete their studies with a clear career in sight. This initiative is a powerful tool for achieving SDG 1 (No Poverty) by directly facilitating decent work (SDG 8) for its graduates.

Alumni at AIUB - Internship clinic for FBA interns organized by OPA
The Office of Placement and Alumni (OPA) organized an "Internship Clinic" for FBA interns on February 1, 2024, featuring an AIUB alumnus as the speaker. This clinic is a targeted initiative to ensure student success for those transitioning from academic study to professional internships—a critical step for successful completion. For students from the bottom 20% of household income group, who may lack professional connections, this mentorship is invaluable. The alumnus provided practical guidance on career planning, goal setting, and professional conduct, effectively building the social capital and industry-specific knowledge needed to succeed. This program directly supports SDG 1 (No Poverty) by equipping students with the tools for economic self-sufficiency and SDG 4 (Quality Education) by linking academic learning with real-world professional practice, ensuring a high rate of graduation/completion into professional roles.

AIUB Job Fair 2024 Technical Session, Tips and Tactics for your Successful Career
In preparation for the annual Job Fair, the Office of Placement and Alumni (OPA) conducted a technical session on December 11, 2024, titled "Tips and Tactics for your Successful Career".3 This workshop, led by a successful AIUB alumnus, is a key component of AIUB’s student success framework, particularly for those from the bottom financial quintile. It provides essential, practical skills on professional networking (LinkedIn), interview techniques, and building a professional profile. These are critical soft skills that students from low-income backgrounds may not have had the opportunity to develop. By providing this programme for free, AIUB ensures all students are equally prepared to engage with employers, thereby leveling the playing field and supporting their successful completion and transition to employment. This initiative strongly supports SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

Dr Anwarul Abedin Lecture Series on "" Secrets to Success"" by Zaheed Sabur
On April 17, 2024, AIUB’s Faculty of Engineering hosted a "Dr. Anwarul Abedin Lecture Series" seminar titled “Secrets to Success” with Zaheed Sabur, an AIUB alumnus and a Distinguished Engineer at Google.3 This high-profile event is a powerful initiative for student success, providing a profound source of inspiration. For students from the bottom 20% of household income group, Mr. Sabur's journey from an AIUB undergraduate to a senior director at Google provides a tangible and powerful role model. He emphasized learning through understanding, balancing life priorities, and sharing knowledge. This mentorship from one of the country's most successful tech leaders equips students with the mindset and motivation required to successfully complete their studies and aim for the highest levels of professional achievement, directly contributing to SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) has implemented a robust and multifaceted system of programmes or initiatives to assist students who fall into the bottom 20% of household income group to successfully complete their studies. The cornerstone of this system is the university's comprehensive "Scholarship and Financial Aid Policy" (https://www.aiub.edu/admission/scholarships). This policy moves beyond merit-only awards to include specific, targeted programmes for students with demonstrated financial need. Key among these is the "General Need Based Tuition Fee Waiver", the "Scholarship for Students from Underrepresented Group" which explicitly includes "low-income" students, and waivers for children of Freedom Fighters and siblings, all designed to alleviate the financial burden that is the primary obstacle to completion for this cohort. This financial support is strategically linked to academic performance, creating a "sustainable loop" where aid is contingent on maintaining a strong CGPA. To ensure students can meet these standards, AIUB provides parallel support initiatives. This is further supplemented by financial literacy programmes and academic support workshops, which together create a holistic framework ensuring students have the financial, professional, and academic resources to successfully complete their degrees. AIUB has several decent admission policies, scholarships, and low-income student support services and these programmes or initiatives provide support for the students to assist students who fall into the low or bottom 20% of household income group to successfully complete their studies.

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) provides extensive assistance in the local community to support the start-up of financially and socially sustainable businesses. This support is delivered through a structured ecosystem that includes formal education, dedicated resources, mentorship programmes, training workshops, and "access to university facilities". The cornerstones of this ecosystem are the university's Dr. Anwarul Abedin Institute of Innovation (D2A2I) and its Business Incubation Center (BIC), which are mandated to provide expert mentorship, skill development, and collaborative workspaces to guide entrepreneurs from ideation to launch. AIUB operationalizes this support by acting as a central hub for the local tech and business start-up community. In 2024, the university provided "access to its facilities" by hosting major industry-led ideation events like the Cisco IoT Hackathon, the NASA Space Apps Challenge, and AWS Community Day. These events bring local innovators together with global industry leaders for mentorship and training. This external-facing role is complemented by a robust internal pipeline of education and training, including seminars on entrepreneurship, business plan exhibitions, and specialized workshops on essential start-up skills like product management, digital marketing, and AI.

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) provides significant financial assistance to the local community to support the start-up of financially and socially sustainable businesses. This support is delivered through a strategic, dual-pronged approach. Firstly, the university provides direct institutional support through its Business Incubation Center (BIC), which operates under the Dr. Anwarul Abedin Institute of Innovation (D2A2I) with a clear mandate to provide "seed funding" and "access to grants" for promising entrepreneurs. This direct support is often manifested as prize money in university-hosted competitions, such as the Cisco IoT Hackathon and the AIUB Architecture Week, where winners receive substantial cash prizes that act as initial seed funding. Secondly, and more expansively, AIUB acts as a crucial "financial broker" for the local start-up community. The university leverages its industry and government partnerships to bring major external funding opportunities directly to its students and local innovators. Key 2024 events, like the seminar on the ICT Ministry's RIC project offering "funding up to BDT 60 lac" and the workshop with Orange Corners offering "grants up to 5,000 euros", demonstrate how AIUB facilitates access to financial assistance far exceeding its own resources, thereby multiplying its impact on poverty reduction (SDG 1) and innovation (SDG 9).

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) actively participates in policy making at local, regional, national, and/or global levels to implement programmes and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions. This participation is evident in its roles as both a contributor to national policy development and a leader in global policy discourse. At the national level, AIUB leverages its research capabilities to influence policy. The most significant 2024 example is its partnership in a World Bank-funded research project on solar irrigation. By hosting "Policy Engagement" and "Dissemination" workshops with high-level government bodies like the Ministry of Agriculture and BADC, AIUB is directly participating in the "research-to-policy" pipeline to end poverty in rural Bangladesh. Furthermore, AIUB's leadership engages directly with national bodies like the University Grants Commission (UGC) to shape higher education policies on scholarships and academic standards. At the global level, AIUB has committed to international policies by becoming a signatory of the SDG Accord and the Magna Charta Universitatum (MCU). The university then participates in policy making by presenting its own successful poverty-reduction models, such as its project in the Korail slum, at global forums like the International Association of Universities (IAU) Conference.

AIUB hosts Dissemination Workshop on Solar Irrigation and Climate Adaptation
On December 11, 2024, AIUB hosted a "Dissemination Workshop" for a yearlong collaborative research project on solar irrigation, supported by the World Bank. This event is a prime example of participation in policy making at the national level. The workshop's purpose was to present research findings to key policymakers, including the Guest of Honour, the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture. By providing this "research-to-policy" platform, AIUB actively contributed to shaping national programmes and policies for climate adaptation and sustainable agriculture, which are critical for ending poverty for farmers in Bangladesh. This initiative aligns with SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Policy Engagement Workshop on collaborative research - "Social Innovation Through Technology"
Held on February 7, 2024, this event was the "Initiation of Policy Engagement Workshop" for the same World Bank-supported project. The event's title and participants (including the Chairman of BADC and a Director from SREDA) confirm its function as direct participation in policy making. AIUB provided the academic platform for stakeholders from government, international bodies (World Bank, ADPC), and academia (Durham, Curtin) to collaborate on developing a "behavioral toolkit for diffusing solar irrigation." This programme aims to influence farmer behavior and national policy to increase adoption of climate-smart technology, a key strategy to end poverty in rural communities. This demonstrates AIUB's role in shaping national policy from the ground up, in line with SDG 1, SDG 7, and SDG 17.

AIUB announced its status as a signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum (MCU) 2020 on April 16, 2024. By signing this global policy document, AIUB formally commits to promoting "social responsibility" and "engaging with and responding to the aspirations and challenges of the world and to the communities they serve." This is a clear participation in policy making at the global level. As part of this commitment, AIUB is implementing a project in the Korail slum focusing on policies to end poverty, including low-cost housing and education for the underprivileged. This demonstrates AIUB's adoption of global-level policies and its translation of them into concrete local action, addressing SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) actively organizes and supports a multitude of training or programmes to improve access to basic services for all, with a strong focus on the wider local community. These programmes directly address fundamental needs such as food security, healthcare, and education, which are all pillars of poverty reduction (SDG 1). The university's programmes for food and healthcare access are vividly demonstrated by the institutionally-supported student-led initiatives of the AIUB Social Welfare Club, 'Shomoy'. In 2024, this club executed major relief programmes, including Students of AIUB: Standing with the Flood-Effected, which delivered essential food and medical supplies to 1200 families, and the “Oder Eid, Amader Khushi” campaign, which provided food packages to 150 underprivileged families. Beyond immediate relief, AIUB is committed to providing long-term access to the basic service of education. This is most notably actualized through its long-running Kathpencil Pathshala programme, which provides free education and meals to underprivileged children. This commitment is further expanded through numerous free training workshops and academic Olympiads hosted by AIUB for students from various local schools and colleges, thereby improving community-wide access to basic educational services.
